GreenMind Initiative
GreenMind Initiative is a student-led summer project that combines environmental cleanup with mental health awareness and charitable giving. The initiative brings together volunteers to restore NYC parks while promoting the idea that cleaner public spaces contribute to clearer minds and stronger communities. By organizing frequent park cleanups, the project creates opportunities for youth and community members to reflect, reconnect with nature, and support a cause that affects millions. In addition to the physical impact, the initiative raises funds for mental health nonprofits such as Active Minds and NAMI NYC, linking environmental care with direct contributions to mental well-being.
Donations
Every two weeks, we use a portion of donations to purchase cleanup supplies like gloves and bags. The remaining funds are donated to a different mental health charity each cycle, spreading impact and supporting a range of organizations doing vital work. This system ensures our project stays sustainable while consistently giving back to the broader mental health community.
Founders
The project was founded by Maximo Schmeling and Leon Nakai, and Oliver Parr: three 16-year-old students who are passionate about making a difference in their community and raising awareness for mental health. As teens growing up in New York City, we saw the need for cleaner public spaces and stronger support for emotional well-being. Inspired by our own experiences and a desire to help others, we combined our love for service and advocacy into a project that brings people together, promotes mental clarity, and gives back to mental health organizations doing life-changing work.
